Third Week of Paleo Challenge Starting!

Almost Half way home! The first two hard weeks are out of the way. The picture above was the white board the first day of the Paleo Challenge! It is a showing of the commitment that you the athletes are willing to take the next step to improve your fitness.

Have you stuck to your orginal goals you made to yourself that first day? Are you making it into the box at least 3 times a week and giving your all to each WOD? Improvement and change will only come if you are committed.

Remember that nutrition is 80% of your fitness. Good fuel in (food) equals good fuel out. When eating remember meat, vegetables, some fruit, nuts, and seeds.

As we enter the second week of the paleo challenge I hope every one is being creative and prepared for the nutritional challenges that we face on a daily basis.  One of the biggest problems we all face is just how much food do we eat to lose weight, but not starve our bodies of the nutrients we need to function properly.

Fortunately,  in these modern days of the computers and smart phones, there are apps that were created to help us. Counting calories use to be a chore but with these apps it just a matter of pushing a few buttons on your phone or computer. Not only do you have your calories but you also have your nutrients calculated. 

These programs allow you to get a grip on the amount of good clean food it takes to provide you with the proper nutritional balance. Don’t get me wrong I hate calorie counting, but I am able to use this as a way to keep me on track. 

I use an app called Lose It which is available on the I-phone, I- touch, I-pad and at Lose It.com. I use this app for ease of use and it was free. It is not the only free app out there. So if you have access to a smart phone or other device look for a free app that could help keep you on track.

You’ve made the commitment to CrossFit, so you must know that exercise is important for your health and wellness. You are getting stronger and faster everyday, but are you really getting the most out of the time you are putting into the gym? If your nutrition is not in line with your effort in the box, you are selling yourself short. Nutrition in the basis of all health and wellness, and to see the best results you must commit to not only the work, but to the eating as well.

Nutrition is 85% of your overall fitness. You have taken a step in the right direction by participating in the Paleo Challenge. Remember that planning and preparation are key in keeping yourself on track. Have healthy paleo snacks available at all times, and don’t be afraid to ask for substitutes when eating out.

Wow! What a response for our Paleo Challenge. Here is a reminder of the basics as you plan your menus. Remember all the trainers are here to help and answer questions.

PALEO GUIDELINES:

 Do Eat:

Meat (and fat, fish, eggs)

Vegetables (and berries)

Fruit

Nuts

Do not eat:

Dairy (milk, cheese, butter, etc) (*)

Grains or corn (maize, wheat, barley, rice, etc.)

Starchy vegetables (potatoes, yams, jerusalem artichokes, etc.)

Sugar (refined)

Legumes (beans, soy products, peanuts, cashew, lentils, etc.)

Chemical food additives

Go easy on:

Salt (can cause overeating and hypertension and dull the senses)

Processing of foods (nut flours/butters, pork rind flour, etc.) Eat simple foods instead

Artificial sweeteners (don’t dull your senses, and they cause insulin responses simply by being sweet on the tastebuds)

It’s time to up your game and improve yourself and your performance, so CrossFit Cypress is announcing a PALEO CHALLENGE. Beginning on Monday, January 31st and running for 6 weeks, the challenge is to be the best you can be, and it all begins with NUTRITION! Good fuel in your body will produce the best results.

Nutrition is the basis of all healthy living, and for 6 weeks you will be challenged to live the Paleo lifestyle.

Cost

The cost to enter the challenge is $30.00. Each participant in the challenge will receive a t-shirt. You can register HERE.

Requirements

Each athlete in the challenge will be required to weigh in and have measurements taken with a CrossFit Cypress trainer at the beginning of the challenge. This must be completed no later than Wednesday, February 2nd, and it should be completed before your scheduled WOD time. (Don’t  worry all the numbers will be kept confidential!) Weight and measurements will then be taken again at the end of the 6 weeks, and percentage of decrease will be determined.

Each athlete will also be required to complete two mandatory WODS. The first will be on Monday, January 31st and the second will be on Wednesday, February 2nd. These WODS will then be repeated, under the same conditions, at the end of the challenge.

Winners

 First, second, and third place winners will be determined at the end of the 6 weeks in two different catagories,  Body Change and Performance Improvement. Percentage of change will be used to detemine the winners. Prizes will be awarded to the top three athletes in each catagory.

We will also provide you with a list of what you can eat and where you can find these foods, as well as handouts with resources to use daily in your venture into Paleo eating!

To kick off our Paleo Challenge CrossFit Cypress will be hosting a Paleo Nutrition Clinic and Sampler Luncheon on Saturday, January 29th at 11:00. We will be discussing the Paleo diet and providing several different Paleo options for sample. We will also have information on what to eat and where to get it.
